A Year of Transformative Impact: Tusome Africa's Early Childhood Education Initiative

In our unwavering quest to provide quality education to every child, three years ago, Tusome Africa embarked on a remarkable journey. We set out to establish high-quality but low-cost Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres in three schools nestled within Uganda's Iganga District. As we celebrate this pivotal one-year milestone, since its inception, through the challenges of constructing during the pandemic, we are thrilled to share the profound impact this initiative has had on the community and, most importantly, on the eager young minds it serves.

Fostering a Stronger Community

Mr Edward Bukye, the headteacher of one of the participating schools, shares his observations:

"Children have learnt to live together in a social environment as evidenced during times for midday meals and also during outdoor activities. Pupils at lower primary (P1) can read and write as a result of the skills attained at the nursery level. Parents' attention for their children has increased and this is seen by their commitment to packing school lunch for the children as well while picking them up from school."

Para-educator Statement of Transformations

Esther, a dedicated ECE teacher, passionately describes the transformations she's seen in young learners as follows:

"Children have learned to share play materials with others through the paraeducator’s help; they have developed good morals while at school like greeting each other and their teachers, as well as sharing during break time”.

Teacher Esther's heartfelt account underscores the profound influence of dedicated educators who, through ongoing professional development, are shaping the early educational experiences of these young learners.

Empowering the Community

Daniel, a parent whose child is enrolled in the ECE program, shares his perspective:

"The ECE has enabled my children to learn different skills like reading and writing and my son can manage time on school and home days. Many other parents are impressed with how organised the school is and how communicative the parents are with the teachers and have now also signed up to take their children to school”

Daniel's words reflect the invaluable impact this initiative has had on families and the community at large. Early education is not only enhancing children's learning but also reshaping the community's perception of the importance of education and the community’s response to ECE.

Reflecting on a Year of Achievements

As we celebrate this one-year milestone, we also celebrate the conducive classrooms that have been established for children who live closer to the schools and can afford to pay to attend ECE. These classrooms provide an effective and engaging learning environment, ensuring the safety and comfort of the children. The newly recruited and trained ECE teachers, like Esther, have been instrumental in upholding a high standard of education and creating a nurturing atmosphere for young learners. Moreover, parents' overwhelmingly positive attitude towards nursery teaching has kindled a newfound interest in early learning among local children. As we mark this profound achievement, Tusome staff are driven by the progress made and inspired to continue our mission of providing quality education to every child.
