We are Tusome Africa.
A charity working with communities, schools and education partners in Uganda to strengthen the foundations children need to learn.
Since 2017, we have developed practical approaches to early childhood education, reading, and learning assessment — shaped by what we learn alongside the people and communities we work with.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn well, regardless of background or circumstance.
Education changes what is possible in a person's life.
A child's opportunity to learn should not be determined by where they live, what their family earns, or whether their learning needs are recognised.
Yet for many children, the journey begins with uneven foundations. Some enter primary school without early learning experiences that build confidence. Others find classrooms where books are scarce and teachers have little support to respond to different learning needs.
These challenges are connected. What happens in the early years influences how children approach school. Access to books and quality teaching shapes what they learn. And the information available to educators shapes how learning gaps are understood and addressed.
Tusome exists to strengthen those foundations.

We listen to parents, educators and local partners to understand children's experiences and shape responses that are locally grounded.
Strengthen foundations and the people who sustain them
We focus on what children need to progress — quality early learning, opportunities to read, foundational skills — and on strengthening the capacity of the educators, parents and partners who make learning possible.
Learn from evidence, build for the long term
We use assessment, observation and feedback to understand what is changing and how support can be improved. We also pay attention to ownership, cost and capacity, so progress can continue beyond a single project.
Build Embed Sustain
Children's learning is a shared responsibility.
Children's learning is shaped by many people: the educator who encourages a child to try again, the parent who makes time for a story, the school leader who protects time for reading, and the community that sustains a local learning initiative.
We work alongside these people rather than separate from them.
Lasting progress depends on working together — with communities, educators, local authorities, funders and partners who share a commitment to better learning.
