🌱 Tusome Paraeducators: Women Leading the Classroom Revolution

Women Leading the Classroom Revolution

Across rural Uganda, thousands of children begin school without the foundation they need to succeed. Many villages have no early childhood teachers — and yet, within those same communities, there are women ready to teach, nurture, and lead.

The Tusome Paraeducator Programme bridges this gap. We identify and train women from local communities to become early childhood educators, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and resources to transform the lives of young learners.

Our Approach: Training Women. Teaching Children. Transforming Communities.

1. Invest Phase — Empowering Women
We recruit women with a passion for children’s learning and train them in play-based, inclusive teaching methods. Each paraeducator receives a scholarship for accredited ECE training, start-up kits with classroom materials, and a bicycle to reach children in remote villages.

“I never thought I could stand before a class and teach. Now I help 40 children learn to read and count every day.”Jane, Paraeducator, Iganga District

2. Embed Phase — Building Roots in the Community
Paraeducators begin running Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres attached to existing schools. Through parent-teacher meetings, savings groups, and community learning committees, they embed education deeply within local life.

These women become role models proof that leadership begins where you are.

3. Sustain Phase — Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Over time, centres transition to community or government management. Paraeducators continue to teach, mentor new recruits, and strengthen local ownership. What starts as a project grows into a movement: education led by communities, sustained by women.

The Impact So Far

  • 21 women pareducators across Iganga, and Wakiso

  • 700+ children enrolled in Tusome-supported ECE centres

  • 5 local savings groups formed to ensure programme sustainability

  • 100% of paraeducators retained after one year of service

Each woman trained means dozens of children learning to read, play, and dream.
