Across Uganda, thousands of children still attend schools without a single library. At Tusome Africa, we’re changing that — one library at a time.ool without the foundation they need to succeed. Many villages have no early childhood teachers — and yet, within those same communities, there are women ready to teach, nurture, and lead.

Our Vision

Tusome Africa’s libraries are transforming how children learn, play, and dream. We’ve built 13 vibrant school libraries — 10 in Iganga and 3 in Wakiso — where children read aloud, play games, debate, and write stories. These libraries are more than spaces for books; they are community hubs where confidence grows, friendships form, and literacy takes root.

The Challenge

In rural Uganda, books are a rarity. Many children reach upper primary without being able to read fluently, not because they lack ability — but because they lack access. Most schools have no dedicated reading space, and pupils share a handful of textbooks between them. Without regular reading, imagination and self-belief fade. Our libraries aim to change this reality.

Our Approach

·        Play-based learning: We include board games and puzzles to make libraries fun and inviting.

·        Easy-read books: Age-appropriate, engaging stories for older children reading at lower levels.

·        Local language titles: Stories children understand and relate to — reflecting their homes and cultures.`

·        Library Champions: Pupils from classes 4–6 who help their peers discover the joy of reading.
